Common Core Content Activity: MS Figurative Language

MS Figurative Language: This unit replaces Figurative Language Informational and Literature. In these activities, we learn about understanding and using Figurative Language. The unit reflects both literatures as well as informational text. The students are introduced to literal and figurative meanings of words and phrases, formal and informal tones, metaphors, similes, and idioms, using context clues to understand how it enhances the sentence. Students read emails and text messages written by two middle school students named Sophia and Alex as well as informational blurbs. Sophia and Alex assist the students throughout the activity to determine what the written text means. Throughout the unit, the students practice all activities on real-life examples.

Each activity is completed on two different levels for differentiated instruction.

I teach a wide variety of grades. I'm in a small school that has middle and high schools combined. I teach 6 grades. So, having pre-made materials that I could print and sort by student made it easy for me to stay organized while working with multiple students on multiple grade levels, ability levels, and subjects all at the same time. This same binder system also eliminated the need for substitute lesson plan preps as my paraprofessional and the sub were able to easily see where each student was at that moment and continue instruction.
